Is a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) inspired event.

The Civic Leadership Academy (CLA) is an engaging 8-week program(s) that provides residents with an in-depth look at government with an intense focus on city government. The program includes hands-on demonstrations and presentations that give participants an insider view of how the City of Flint operates. With this knowledge, participants will be better equipped to lead collective action towards the advancement of neighborhoods and residents’ quality of life.

Civic Leadership Youth Academy (CLYA) is an engaging 8-week program(s) for residents of Flint 14 – 19 years old that provides residents with an in-depth look at government with an intense focus on city government. The program includes hands-on demonstrations and presentations that give participants an insider view of how the City of Flint operates.  With this knowledge, participants will be better equipped to lead collective action towards the advancement of neighborhoods and residents’ quality of life.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is a multi-disciplinary approach of crime prevention that uses urban and architectural design and the management of built and natural environments. CPTED strategies aim to reduce victimization, deter offender decisions that precede criminal acts, and build a sense of community among inhabitants so they can gain territorial control of areas, reduce crime, and minimize fear of crime. The NFNAC toes CPTED to Crime Watch training to help residents be the eyes and ears of their community to help it become and stay safe.

The Symposium is an opportunity for residents and community partners to gather in a learning setting about issues that are important to them.  Issues that have and will be discussed are:

  • Micro Opportunities to Serve (MOS)

The goal is to provide residents with information and real life conversation on how to implement these and other trainings into their block club, neighborhood association or partner organizations.

Platform is an opportunity for young people from North Flint to find their voice through creative performances about issues that are important and impact their lives. Platforms desires to share the raw emotion of trying to deal with poverty, the police, the educational system, the political system and their family dynamics and yet still have the wherewithal and desire to still succeed. Platforms will use their performances to begin conversations that they get to participate in and help to find solutions for

Tales from the Hood is an opportunity for members of the community to share resilience through song, dance, spoken word and rap. Tales from the Hood provides a safe space in community for residents to enjoy the talent and abilities of those who are from their community. Community organizations, local entrepreneurs and other groups seeking to reach this audience are also invited to participate in the fun and festivities.

Every society, every community, every group and every person have skills, strengths and the capacity to problem solve, act creatively and work together for the benefit of their group. Community capacity is defined as the interaction of human capital, organizational resources, and social capital existing within a given community that can be leveraged to solve collective problems too improve or maintain the well-being of a given community. The NFNAC leverages community capacity as well as anchor partner support to move resident lead engagements forth. Such trainings as: • How to start block club and neighborhood association • Open bank accounts • Getting your neighbors to the table • Develop budgets & seek funding opportunities • Neighborhood Planning

The NFNAC also assists block clubs, neighborhood groups and residents with working to make a difference in the civic life of their community and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference. It entails promoting the quality of life in our community, through both political and non-political processes. We assist residents with • Social Responsibility • Community Research • Association Involvement • Advocacy & Education

Is a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) inspired event. The Love a Lot, Love a Life Project was birthed out of the NFNAC Housing & Neighborhoods Action Team for the purpose of reaching areas in which there are not or we are unaware of a block club or neighborhood association being associated with them.  The Love a Lot portion of the project is to assist the area by boarding abandoned houses and painting the boards, cutting vacant lots, removing illegal dumping, clear sidewalks of debris and brush so they are traversable.   The Love a Life portion is when we approach residents who may not have the wherewithal to maintain their yard if we can assist in manicure their lawn, plant flowers and remove overgrown shrubbery.  The project reaches desires to reach out and to remind that community has not forgotten them.
